Car Insurance Tips For International Students

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When you are an international student studying in the US, it can be a bit confusing with the new culture and possibly even a new language. Often the simplest things can be difficult to get the hang of. Things like car insurance can be a whole new challenge when you are not familiar with the process or the rules.

If you`ll be driving in the country you plan to study in, you will want to have car insurance. Most students are on a budget anyway and having to deal with the cost of an accident, no matter how minor is usually a big dent in the budget, particularly if you were at fault.

- Look for a car insurance provider that doesn't penalize international students. Many companies will insist on a minimum of 3 years US driving experience in order to qualify for lower rates and higher coverage. Since the majority of international students have little or no experience driving in the States, they will end up paying more for less coverage. A very few insurance companies will count foreign driving experience and offer lower rates and deductibles.

- While liability is the minimum requirement by law, it`s a good idea to find out how much more you`ll pay for collision insurance, as well as comprehensive. Liability covers your passengers or property that you damage in an accident, collision will cover repairs to your vehicle if you crash, even if the accident was your fault. Comprehensive insurance is meant to help you recover your financial losses if the vehicle is stolen or destroyed by means other than a car accident.

- Keep the age of your vehicle in mind. Older cars usually aren`t worth insuring for anything more than liability, since you would be better off replacing the vehicle than repairing it in most cases. Newer cars will need to be insured for more since it`s usually far cheaper to repair them than buy a new vehicle. The general rule of thumb is that a car older than 1989 should carry liability only.

- Look for fixed rates. Some car insurance companies will let you sign up for 6 months or 12 months, where your rates will not go up, even if you have an accident during that time. Obviously, the longer the term, the better.

- Make sure you have an up-to-date international driver`s license. This will allow you to drive both in your home country and in the US. Most international students have no need for an American driver`s license, so an international one should be fine. Just be sure that it is good for at least six months after your stay ends so you`ll be able to get the best car insurance possible.

- Bring all paperwork that could be necessary with you when you apply for car insurance. You`ll need proof that you haven`t had an accident in the previous 18-36 months for the best rates. All driving related paperwork will help you out when applying for car insurance and can drastically cut the waiting time, as well, since you won`t be trying to get your papers from your home country.

Car insurance for international students might be a bit tricky, but it mainly comes down to doing some research to find which companies will give you a break, even if you haven`t been driving in the States for the past three years. The prices and amount of coverage should be fair and not hiked up just because you are only temporarily in the country.

Non Owner Auto Insurance - What You Need to Know About Non Owner Car Insurance

Image : http://www.flickr.com

You can buy car insurance even if you don't own a vehicle. This type of coverage is known as non owner auto insurance. So why would you consider this?

When To Buy Non Owner Coverage

You may want to consider buying this type of coverage in a situation where you are living in a city and rely on public transportation most of the time but are renting or borrowing a vehicle from someone often. You want to have adequate insurance protection if an accident occurs to pay for injuries or damage to property.

What Happens After An Accident

If an accident occurs while you are behind the wheel of a borrowed or rented car, the owner's insurance policy would be in effect. He or she would be responsible for any damages owing over the policy limits. As the driver at the time of the accident, you may be faced with legal action from the owner or the insurance company to recover the money paid out after the accident. Buying a non owner car insurance policy will protect your assets.

The Cost

In a situation where you are renting a vehicle often, it may be less expensive for you to buy your own insurance than to get coverage through the rental company each time. You also have the added assurance that you are covered for every vehicle you are driving, not just the one you have rented.

Another scenario where buying a non owner auto insurance policy may make sense is when you drive a company car for work. You will be covered under the employer's insurance policy, but how many people would ask how much coverage the company's insurance policy provides when they get behind the wheel of a company car.

How To A Find Non Owner Car Insurance Policy

You look for non owner car insurance in the same way as you shop for other car insurance coverage. You can look online for a company that offers this type of coverage and request a quote, or contact an independent insurance agent who can get quotes for you.

Family or friends may be able to help you find non owner car insurance coverage as well. Ask around to see if anyone knows of a company you can contact to get this type of protection.

Once you have quotes in hand, you need to go over them very thoroughly to make sure you understand the policy provisions. Every auto insurance company will have use different language in its policies and it's important to go over each clause so you understand exactly what you are getting.

Pay special attention to the policy's exclusions as well. No policy covers all situations, and you don't want to assume that you have protection only to find out after an accident that you don't.

Multi Car Insurance Can Work Out Cheaper

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If you have more than one car in your home then it can work out cheaper to take out multi car insurance. Car insurance can be confusing and there are limitations which are set out in the exclusions and it is essential that you read the small print of any policy you are interested in and let a specialist website search around on your behalf for the lowest premiums for your cover.

Specialist insurers will offer discounts when you are insuring more than one car if you take them both out together at the same time but just as when comparing premiums for single car insurance it is better if you let a specialist website search around on your behalf for the cheapest premiums. You can also benefit from a specialists' advice by the FAQs and other information they will make available so you understand a policy and the options available.

The three main types of car insurance include fully comprehensive which offers the most cover but of course is the most expensive type of car insurance. Depending on the value of your car you might have to take to take out fully comprehensive, certainly if you buy a brand new car. Third party fire and theft can be taken cheaply but this of course doesn't give you as much cover as fully comprehensive though it covers against having your car stolen or if destroyed or damaged by fire as well as covering any damage caused by you to a third party or their vehicle.

The cheapest form of motor insurance is third party only and this insurance will payout for damage to others but not your own car if you should cause an accident.

Once you have determined the type of insurance that you require then a specialist will be able to find you the cheapest quotes for multi car insurance and present them to you in the shortest time possible along with the vital information needed to ensure that you understand your policy.

Getting Car Insurance In The Philippines

Image : http://www.flickr.com

While I do agree that if we can afford it, we should get insured in preparation for incase something 'bad' or 'unexpexted' occurs. However, not all things are worth getting insured for.

Take for example car insurance. Its an absolute must to get a car insurance when buying a brand new car or a luxury vehicle in case of theft or serious damage.

But if you're getting a second hand car worth less than 300k pesos I dont think that paying for that unit's insurance is worth it.

Normally when an accident happens to your car. You take it to the 'talyer' to be fixed and to estimate the cost of repairs. Or you could take it to your car service station.

Depending on your chosen car insurance provider. Most car insurance company will only cover the amount in excess of 5k to 10k pesos. Which is pretty unfair and is one of my greatest gripes about paying for insurance.

For example, if your car insurance policy cover's only damage in excess of 10k pesos. And if the cost to have your car fixed is below 10k, you dont get paid by the
insurance agency. If it cost you 12k pesos to fix, the insurance agency will only pay you the 2k pesos. You shoulder the 10k pesos aside from the yearly premiums that you pay.

Ofcourse, there are exceptions to this. If you're livelihhod depends on your car like privately owned taxis, school and shuttle services or delivery vans for your pick up trucks like the popular mitsubishi L300 and the kia ceres. Getting an insurance will probably give you the peace of mind incase of theft. But the value of the vehicle should be taken into consideration before getting the insurance you think you might need.

Car Insurance Tips - Compare Rates

Image : http://www.flickr.com

What Can Affect Your Rate?

It doesn't matter what type of insurance you plan to attain, your going to have to consider the many factors that can affect your rate. A large factor that determines your rate is your location. Some locations file more claims than others, and insurance companies are well aware of this. This rule applies to any type of insurance, including car, health, or even pets!

Another factor is your personal claim history. This is a huge factor and many people are affected by it. For example, someone who has a few accidents on their driving record, recent or not, will usually have a much harder time finding a good rate on their car insurance. If they are at a large risk they may have a hard time finding a company to insure them at all! People looking to lower their car insurance rates have many options available to them. Car insurance companies like to see individuals who have graduated from some type of driving school. They also like to see the purchase of a safe car, with airbags, seat belts, and anti-theft devices.

Always Compare Insurance Rates!

The best thing you can do that can affect your insurance rate to choose your insurance company wisely. Not all companies are created equal, and some are much more expensive than others. Each company has it's own system of determining risk factors and therefore your overall price. Companies also have different packages to choose from, with different levels of coverage. Be sure to let your insurance company know what needs you require to find out which plan works best for you and your situation. Shopping around for rates is by far the best way you can get the best rate, so get out there and take notes so you can jot down the pros and cons of each company. Only then will you be able to make the best decision for you and your needs.

An easy way to compare insurance companies is online. Major insurance companies usually have a website that give you free online quotes. It can be as simple as entering in your name, your social, and a few personal questions. Usually you will get an estimate immediately. Eventually you will get a call from a qualified agent who has reviewed your information and can give you a more exact estimate. This is a great way to compare rates. You don't need to travel, you can compare rates in your underwear and insurance companies will be competing for your business. You can't be that!
